Colombey-les-Deux-Églises is a commune in northeastern France, located in the department of Haute-Marne in the Grand Est region. The village is primarily known for its significant connection to Charles de Gaulle, who lived here from 1934 until his death in 1970.
De Gaulle purchased La Boisserie, an estate in Colombey, which became his family home and personal retreat. The village is now an important memorial site, featuring the Cross of Lorraine Memorial, a 44.3-meter-high monument erected in 1972 in honor of the former French president and World War II resistance leader. The Memorial Charles de Gaulle, opened in 2008, offers visitors insight into the life and legacy of one of France's most influential political figures.
The village's name, meaning "Colombey of the Two Churches," refers to its two historic churches, though only one remains today.
