Clamecy is a historic commune located in the Burgundy region of central France, situated along the Yonne River. The town has a rich history dating back to medieval times and was once an important center for timber floating, where logs were transported downstream to Paris.
This practice, known as "flottage du bois," played a crucial role in the town's development from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The town's architectural heritage is notably represented by the Gothic-style Church of Saint-Martin and several historic buildings in its old town. Clamecy also has cultural significance as the birthplace of several French literary figures, including the writer Claude Tillier and Romain Rolland, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1915.
