Castelseprio, located in the province of Varese in northern Italy, is a significant archaeological site and former fortified settlement that dates back to the Late Roman and Early Medieval periods. The site is particularly notable for its exceptional 8th-century frescoes in the Church of Santa Maria foris portas, which represent some of the most important examples of Early Medieval art in Italy.
The archaeological area includes the remains of military fortifications, religious buildings, and civilian structures that tell the story of its evolution from a Roman castrum to a Lombard stronghold. In 2011, the archaeological area of Castelseprio was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "The Longobards in Italy, Places of Power (568-774 A.D.)." The site provides valuable insights into the artistic and architectural developments of the Lombard period in Italy.
