Castellar de la Frontera is a historic municipality located in the Campo de Gibraltar comarca of Andalusia, Spain. The town is notable for its well-preserved medieval castle and old town, which sits atop a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside.
The original settlement, known as Castellar Viejo (Old Castellar), is a prime example of medieval architecture and urban planning, with its narrow streets and traditional whitewashed houses contained within the castle walls. The fortress, dating back to the 13th century, played a significant role in defending the frontier between Christian and Moorish territories. In the 1970s, a new town (Castellar Nuevo) was built in the valley below to provide more modern amenities for residents.
The area's cultural heritage reflects the blend of Christian and Islamic influences that characterize much of Andalusian history, visible in its architecture and local traditions. The town's strategic location offers views of the Rock of Gibraltar, the Strait of Gibraltar, and on clear days, the North African coast.
