Castalian Springs is a historic unincorporated community located in Sumner County, Tennessee. The area is particularly notable for its rich Native American history and archaeological significance.
The site was once home to a significant Native American settlement during the Mississippian period (1000-1450 CE) known as Castalian Springs Mound Site. This archaeological site features platform mounds and other remnants of the prehistoric Native American culture. The community later became known for its mineral springs, which were a popular health resort destination in the 19th century. The Wynnewood State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark, is located here and represents one of the largest existing log structures in Tennessee, built in 1828 as a stagecoach inn and mineral springs resort. The area's historical significance extends from prehistoric times through the early American frontier period, making it an important location for understanding Tennessee's cultural heritage.
