Carthage is the county seat of Hancock County, Illinois, located in the western part of the state. The city has historical significance as it was near here that Mormon leader Joseph Smith was killed in 1844 at the old Carthage Jail, which now serves as a historic site and visitor center.
The community, founded in 1833, has preserved much of its 19th-century architectural heritage, particularly around its central courthouse square. Today, Carthage is home to Carthage College's original campus site and maintains its small-town character while serving as an agricultural and commercial center for the surrounding rural area. The city's cultural heritage is reflected in its historic buildings, local museum collections, and annual community events that celebrate its rich history.
