Cartago, located in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, is a historically significant city that served as the country's first capital until 1823. Founded in 1563 by Juan Vázquez de Coronado, the city has maintained much of its colonial heritage despite being repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, particularly the devastating 1923 earthquake.
The city is home to the famous Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, a major religious landmark that attracts thousands of pilgrims annually, especially during the traditional romería in August. The surrounding area is known for its rich agricultural land, where coffee and other crops are cultivated in the fertile volcanic soil of the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes.
The city has developed into an important educational center, hosting the Costa Rica Institute of Technology, while maintaining its traditional character and cultural significance.
