Cahokia, located in present-day Illinois, United States, was once the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico. The site, now known as Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, was the center of the Mississippian culture from approximately 700 to 1400 CE. At its peak around 1100 CE, the city covered nearly six square miles and had a population estimated between 10,000 to 20,000 people.
The most notable feature of Cahokia is Monks Mound, the largest prehistoric earthen construction in the Americas, which served as a platform for ceremonial buildings and activities. The site represents remarkable achievements in engineering, astronomy, and urban planning of Native American cultures.
Today, Cahokia is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as an important cultural and archaeological center where visitors can learn about the sophisticated prehistoric civilization that once thrived in the heart of North America.
