Bougon is a small commune located in the Deux-Sèvres department in western France's Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The area is particularly notable for its archaeological significance, being home to the Bougon Tumuli, a remarkable collection of Neolithic burial mounds dating back to around 4700 BCE.
These prehistoric monuments represent some of the oldest architectural structures in France and have greatly contributed to our understanding of early human settlements and burial practices in western Europe. The site includes five tumuli spread across 2.5 hectares of land, and today houses the Museum of Tumuli, which presents the archaeological findings and history of these ancient structures.
