Atascadero is a city located in San Luis Obispo County, California, situated roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco along the U.S. Route 101. The city, whose name derives from a Spanish word meaning "bog" or "mire," was founded in 1913 as one of California's first planned communities.

The city's cultural centerpiece is the historic Atascadero City Hall, originally constructed in 1918 as the Administrative Headquarters of Colony Holding Corporation. This Italian Renaissance-style building, which was significantly damaged in the 2003 San Simeon Earthquake and later restored, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city maintains a strong connection to its historical roots through various heritage sites and annual cultural events, while also embracing its role as part of California's Central Coast wine region.
