Appomattox is a historic town in Virginia, United States, most notably known as the location where Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the American Civil War.
The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park preserves the McLean House where the surrender took place and several other historic buildings from the period. The town, which grew around the historic courthouse, maintains much of its 19th-century character while serving as an important center for Civil War history and education.
The surrounding area features rolling countryside typical of central Virginia, and the community continues to preserve and share its significant role in American history through various cultural and educational institutions.
