Ahwahnee is a small unincorporated community located in Madera County, California, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The area was historically inhabited by the Southern Sierra Miwok Native American tribe, and the name "Ahwahnee" comes from the Miwok word meaning "mouth" or "large mouth," which was their name for Yosemite Valley.

Today, this rural community serves as one of the gateway communities to Yosemite National Park, situated approximately 30 miles from the park's south entrance. While small in size, the area's cultural heritage is closely tied to both its Native American roots and its historical connection to the development of tourism in the Yosemite region.
