The Zellentrakt Memorial in Herford is a significant site dedicated to the victims of National Socialism. Established in 2005, the memorial is located in the former detention rooms of the police, which were in use from 1917. These rooms are situated in the basement vaults of the Herford Town Hall, adding a historical dimension to the memorial.
The Zellentrakt Memorial serves multiple purposes. It is a memorial, a documentation center, and a meeting place. Managed by the Herford Municipal Archive and the Association Kuratorium Erinnern Forschen Gedenken e. V., the memorial commemorates the exclusion, persecution, and extermination of political, ethnic, social, and religious minorities in the past. It also provides a platform for discussions on current issues related to racism and human rights violations.
The Zellentrakt Memorial also houses a library that was saved from destruction. Additionally, it presents the company and family history of the Jewish entrepreneurial family Elsbach/Maas, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the local history and the impact of National Socialism on individual families and businesses.
