Towcester Museum
Source

Towcester Museum comes to life through three interactive exhibitions sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund taking you on a ‘journey through time’ spanning 5,000 years of Towcester’s history. The road – ‘Watling Street’ – has played a major role in the development of Towcester and has fulfilled many functions over the centuries, serving as a highway for military settlements, an ‘international border’ and a major coaching route. By visiting these exhibitions you will gain a deeper appreciation of the everyday experiences of people who lived in Towcester and understand how the town developed and evolved over the centuries.

Situated centrally within the historical core of Towcester, Towcester Museum is a meticulously presented, warm and welcoming museum, with plenty to offer every visitor. Upstairs, there's a 'Road through History' exhibition which guides the visitor through time from the stone age to the 1940s showcasing artefacts from the town in its various guises (Stone Age, Roman, Civil War, Geworgian, Victorian, Twentieth Century and more). Visitors are sure to be pleasantly surprised by the vibrancy of Towcester's past, as the town can be seen as a striking microcosm of the history of Britain as a whole.

Downstairs, the temporary exhibition room plays host to exhibitions of special interest, such as World War I, a Georgian parlour, important Roman stones and a small shop. Of extra interest are three clocks from Towcester. They have also signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant.

The museum is run by dedicated volunteers, who give the museum its warm and friendly atmosphere. Cast aside any prejudices regarding local museums; Towcester museum is an exemplar of how to celebrate a town's vibrant history whilst telling the story of wider Britain.
