The Torre del Oro in Seville (Tower of Gold) is an albarrana tower, a dodecagonal military watchtower, located on the left bank of the rio-guadalquivir, in Seville. Its height is 36 meters and it was erected by the Almohad Caliphate in order to control access to Seville via the river. The tower has three bodies or levels. The first level, dodecagonal, was built in 1220 by order of the Almohad governor. The second level, also dodecagonal, was built by Peter of Castile in the 14th century. The third level, circular in shape was added after the previous third level, Almohad, was damaged by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) in Seville, Spain, is a historic landmark that offers visitors a glimpse into the city's maritime past. This 13th-century watchtower, located along the Guadalquivir River, now houses a small naval museum.

Visitors appreciate the tower's distinctive dodecagonal shape and its golden hue, which is particularly striking during sunset. The museum inside provides information on Seville's naval history and the tower's role in it, though some find the exhibits limited in scope.

The panoramic views from the top of the tower are often highlighted as a highlight, offering a picturesque vista of Seville and the river. However, some visitors note that the climb to the top can be challenging due to narrow, steep stairs.

While the museum's content may not be extensive, many find the historical significance and architectural beauty of the Torre del Oro to be worthwhile. The affordable entry fee is generally considered good value, especially when combined with the views.

Some visitors mention that a visit can be relatively quick, which might be a drawback for those expecting a more comprehensive experience. However, its location near other attractions in Seville makes it a convenient stop on a city tour.

Overall, the Torre del Oro is appreciated for its historical importance and as a landmark of Seville, even if the museum itself may not be the main draw for all visitors.
