The Derby Silk Mill, previously known as the Derby Industrial Museum, is a significant site of industry and history in Derby, England. It is situated on the former grounds of Lombe's Mill, a historic silk mill. This location is not only a testament to the city's rich industrial past but also a symbol of its transformation into a modern hub of culture and learning.

Reopening of the Museum as the Museum of Making

After undergoing a £17 million redevelopment scheme that began in 2016, the museum reopened its doors on 21 May 2021 under the new name, the Museum of Making. This extensive renovation has modernized the museum, making it a more engaging and interactive experience for visitors.

Recognition for Sustainability

In its inaugural year, the newly opened Museum of Making was 'Highly Commended' in the annual Museum+Heritage Awards, specifically in the 'Sustainable Project of the Year' category. This recognition underscores the museum's commitment to sustainability and its efforts to create a positive impact on the environment.

The Silk Mill in Derby, England, offers visitors an insight into the city's industrial heritage. Located on the site of the world's first fully mechanized factory, this museum provides an educational experience about the history of manufacturing and innovation in Derby.

The museum's strong point is its focus on hands-on learning and interactive exhibits. Visitors often appreciate the opportunity to engage with various maker spaces and workshops, allowing them to experience different aspects of manufacturing and design. The museum's emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities is particularly popular among families and school groups.

However, some visitors have noted that the museum's content can be somewhat limited, especially for those expecting a more traditional museum experience. The exhibits may not be as extensive or in-depth as some might hope, which can lead to a shorter visit time than anticipated.

The staff at The Silk Mill generally receive positive feedback for their friendliness and knowledge. Their enthusiasm for the subject matter enhances the overall experience for many visitors.

The building itself, with its historical significance, adds to the atmosphere of the museum. However, some visitors have mentioned that the space could be better utilized or that the layout can be a bit confusing.

While The Silk Mill offers an interesting perspective on Derby's industrial past and present, it may not appeal to all visitors equally. Those interested in hands-on experiences and modern interpretations of industrial heritage will likely find it more engaging than those seeking a more traditional museum format.

Having visited this museum recently I was a little disappointed at the experience. This museum could best be described as one that was created by a committee who saw their roll as creating something different, but, no one was sure what that should be. The staff are most helpful & some of the exhibits are amazing but everything is all muddled up, with very little organisation or explanation. I recognised a number of items that were easily viewable but so much is hidden in drawers, on higher shelves & behind other exhibits. Also, as I’ve said in my review of your sister Museum & Art Gallery, there is an underlying self righteous superiority in some exhibits in reference to our history. We should not be shamed into believing our history to be bad because it doesn’t fit with todays thinking. We should learn from history but I suggest that some people should get a wider & deeper view of that history before expressing their own views in a publicly accessible museum.
