The Derby Museum and Art Gallery offers a diverse collection that highlights the rich history and culture of Derby and Derbyshire. Visitors appreciate the museum's focus on local heritage, particularly the exhibits on Joseph Wright of Derby, a renowned 18th-century painter. The museum's Natural History gallery is also popular, featuring an extensive collection of local specimens. Many reviewers commend the interactive displays and hands-on activities, which make the museum engaging for both adults and children. The museum's commitment to accessibility is often praised, with clear signage and informative descriptions throughout the exhibits. Some visitors note that certain areas of the museum could benefit from updates or expansion. The gift shop and café receive mixed reviews, with some finding them adequate and others suggesting room for improvement. Overall, the museum is considered a valuable resource for understanding Derby's history and art scene, though it may not be as expansive as some larger city museums.
On the whole I found the museum enjoyable but there is an element of self righteous superiority with regards to descriptions on some of the exhibits. It’s fashionable today to suggest that we should be ashamed of some of our history because it doesn’t fit with todays attitudes. This is nonsense & really goes to show that those with that attitude have only a very narrow view & understanding of our history. It’s questionable as to weather holders of such views should be involved in the creation & running of a museum. I can’t pass up the opportunity to comment on the exhibit involving the “Gollywog”. That exhibit demonstrates quite clearly that bigotry is not exclusive to just one side in the problem of racism.
