The Cold War Museum, located in Warrenton, Virginia, is a historical institution dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Cold War history. Founded in 1996 by Francis Gary Powers Jr. and John C. Welch, the museum serves as a tribute to Cold War veterans and a repository of significant artifacts from this pivotal period in world history.
The Cold War Museum boasts a collection of artifacts valued at over $3 million. These include items from significant events such as the 1948–1949 Berlin Airlift, the 1960 U-2 incident, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, which is represented by a 5,000-square-foot display that includes a Soviet SA-2 missile and four American Nike missiles. The museum also houses material from the USS Liberty incident, USS Pueblo incident, Corona spy satellites, and the Space Race.
The Cold War Museum is committed to educating future generations about the Cold War. To this end, the museum has developed a variety of educational programs and activities. Museum speakers have visited numerous educational institutions, including grade schools, high schools, colleges, and universities, to teach students about the Cold War.
