Founded in 1996 by Francis Gary Powers Jr. and John C. Welch, the museum serves as a tribute to Cold War veterans and a repository of significant artifacts from this pivotal period in world history.

Collection of the Cold War Museum

The Cold War Museum boasts a collection of artifacts valued at over $3 million. These include items from significant events such as the 1948–1949 Berlin Airlift, the 1960 U-2 incident, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, which is represented by a 5,000-square-foot display that includes a Soviet SA-2 missile and four American Nike missiles. The museum also houses material from the USS Liberty incident, USS Pueblo incident, Corona spy satellites, and the Space Race.
