The Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail is located in Warrenton, Virginia, and is housed in what was once the sixth jail of Fauquier County. This jail was built in 1808 and was operational for only fifteen years before a new jail was constructed behind it following a lawsuit with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In 1823, the original 1808 jail was repurposed into a jailer's house. This transformation allowed the jailer and his family to move into the premises and take care of the prisoners. This aspect of the museum's history provides a unique insight into the living conditions and practices of the time.
The Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail is not just a local landmark, but also a nationally recognized historic site. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, which is a testament to its historical significance and the role it has played in the history of Fauquier County and Virginia as a whole.
