Source

The Butchart Gardens, located in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, Canada, near Victoria, is a world-renowned tourist attraction. These meticulously maintained gardens offer a complete infrastructure for visitors to spend the entire day admiring the beauty of the flowers and plant species present. With over 700 species and more than a million plants that bloom throughout the year, the gardens provide a unique and captivating experience for all visitors.

History of Butchart Gardens

The Butchart Gardens were established by Robert Pim Butchart and his wife Jennie Butchart. The couple moved to the west coast of Canada due to the rich limestone deposits needed for cement production. In 1904, they set up home near their quarry at Tod Inlet, at the base of the Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island. Over the years, they transformed their property into the beautiful gardens that visitors enjoy today.

Garden Styles at Butchart Gardens

The Butchart Gardens feature a variety of different garden styles. There is a Japanese garden, created by Jennie Butchart with the help of designer Isaburo Kishida. When the quarry was exhausted, Jennie convinced her husband to transform it into a Sunken garden, which was completed in 1921. In 1926, they replaced their tennis court with an Italian garden, and in 1929, they transformed their small kitchen garden into a large rose garden.
