Source

Tanfield Railway is the oldest existing railway in the world, having started as a wooden waggonway in 1725. It has the world's oldest working engine shed (1854), runs on the oldest railway embankment (1725), and passes the oldest railway bridge (1727). Steam passenger trains run on Sundays (except in winter) and several other days. If you only wish to travel on a train, especially if the weather is poor or someone in your party cannot walk easily, check the timetable & go by car to East Tanfield station. If you also wish to see our collection, enjoy a longer visit, or use public transport, check the timetable & go to Andrews House station to catch a train.

Tanfield Railway Reviews

Tanfield Railway has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Tanfield Railway, located in Gateshead, England, offers visitors a journey through railway history. As the world's oldest railway, it provides a hands-on experience of vintage steam locomotives and restored carriages. The volunteer-run attraction is praised for its dedication to preserving industrial heritage. Visitors often enjoy the scenic rides through the countryside, especially during special events like Santa specials or wartime weekends. The staff are generally described as friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the overall experience with their passion for railways. However, some visitors note that facilities are basic, and the site can be muddy in wet weather. The small museum area provides interesting historical context, but some find it limited in scope. While the railway offers a nostalgic trip for train enthusiasts and families alike, those less interested in railways might find the experience less engaging. The attraction's remote location is seen as both a charm and a potential inconvenience. Overall, Tanfield Railway is well-regarded for its historical significance and the authentic steam train experience it offers, despite some minor drawbacks in amenities.
