The Bowes Railway, a unique piece of industrial heritage, was constructed by the renowned engineer George Stephenson in 1826. It holds the distinction of being the only operational preserved standard gauge cable railway system in the world. This railway was initially built to facilitate the transportation of coal from pits in Durham to boats on the River Tyne.
The Bowes Railway is open to the public every week on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from Easter until October. Additionally, it also hosts a number of special event days throughout the year. This provides ample opportunities for visitors to explore this unique railway system and learn about its historical significance.
Visitors to the Bowes Railway can explore the Victorian workshops and witness demonstrations of engineering and blacksmithing. A tour of the railway buildings offers a glimpse into the railway's wagon fleet. Additionally, visitors can also explore the small museum, enjoy refreshments at the cafe, and shop for souvenirs at the on-site shop, all located at Springwell.
