TAMAR Project and its collection

TAMAR Project
Source

The TAMAR Project is a Brazilian initiative that focuses on the preservation of endangered sea turtle species. This project was born out of a need to protect these marine creatures from extinction along the Brazilian coast. It's a collaborative effort between the government and non-governmental organizations, with support from national and international companies and institutions. The project also receives funding from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, the federal government, Petrobras, and tourists who visit the project's facilities and purchase its merchandise.

Project Bases and Operations

The TAMAR Project operates 22 bases along the entire coast of Brazil. Of these, 18 are operational throughout the year, while the remaining 4 are active during the turtle nesting season. These bases are crucial for the project's conservation efforts, as they provide a platform for research, monitoring, and protection of the sea turtles and their habitats.

TAMAR Project Reviews

TAMAR Project has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The TAMAR Project in Vitória, Brazil, is an educational and conservation center focused on sea turtles. Visitors can learn about the different species of sea turtles, their life cycles, and the conservation efforts to protect them. The center features tanks with live turtles, informative displays, and sometimes offers opportunities to see turtle hatchlings. While the exhibits are informative, some visitors note that the facility is relatively small and can be explored quickly. The staff is generally described as knowledgeable and passionate about turtle conservation. However, a few reviewers mention that some explanations are only in Portuguese, which can be challenging for international visitors. The gift shop offers turtle-themed souvenirs, with proceeds supporting conservation efforts. Overall, the TAMAR Project provides a good introduction to sea turtle conservation, but visitors should manage their expectations regarding the size and depth of the exhibits.
