The Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren is a cultural history museum located in the city of Kaufbeuren. The museum focuses on the history of the city, presenting a permanent exhibition that illuminates the history of the Imperial City of Kaufbeuren with all its interconnections into economic and social history.
Founded in 1879, the Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren is one of the oldest city history museums in Bavarian Swabia. The museum was originally established as a 'local museum' by Kaufbeuren art dealer and magistrate Willibald Filser, and it was made publicly accessible from 1880.
The Stadtmuseum Kaufbeuren's collection includes a wide range of objects related to the city's history. Notably, it houses a collection of about 300 crucifixes from nine centuries, which range from artworks from church and monastic life to crosses from the realm of popular piety. The museum also holds significant parts of the private estate of the successful author Ludwig Ganghofer.
