The Slevogthof Neukastel is a mansion from the 19th century that has its roots in a former manor farm, which was once part of the Reichsburg Neukastel. This historical connection adds a layer of depth to the site, making it not just a place of art but also of historical significance.
Max Slevogt, a renowned artist, became artistically active on the Neukastel estate after marrying Antonie โNiniโ Finkler, a daughter of the landowner, in 1898. He later bought the property in 1914. This connection to a famous artist adds a significant cultural value to the Slevogthof Neukastel.
In 1922 and 1923, Slevogt expanded the building ensemble to the south, creating a library and a music hall. He also decorated the rooms with his motifs. These additions and decorations by Slevogt himself add a personal touch to the Slevogthof Neukastel, making it a unique place to visit.
The direct descendants of Max Slevogt operated a museum and a restaurant in the buildings. The former living rooms of Max Slevogt, such as the library, the dining room, or the music hall, had been made accessible. This allows visitors to get a glimpse into the life of the artist and experience the place where he lived and worked.
