Sforzesco Castle, located in the heart of Milan, Italy, is a remarkable historical landmark that doubles as a museum complex. Visitors consistently praise its impressive architecture and rich history. The castle's striking exterior, with its red brick façade and imposing towers, immediately captures attention.
Inside, the castle houses several museums and art collections, offering a diverse range of exhibits. The Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, featuring paintings from the 15th to the 18th centuries, is often highlighted as a particular draw. Many visitors also appreciate the Museum of Ancient Art, which includes Michelangelo's unfinished Pietà Rondanini.
The castle's extensive grounds and beautiful courtyards are frequently mentioned as pleasant areas for relaxation and photography. Many reviewers note that the castle provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling city center.
However, some visitors mention that navigating the vast complex can be overwhelming, and suggest allowing ample time to fully explore all areas. A few reviews also mention that some exhibits lack detailed English translations, which can be a drawback for non-Italian speakers.
The entry fee is generally considered reasonable given the amount of art and history on display. Many visitors recommend purchasing a combined ticket that includes access to all museums within the castle.
Overall, Sforzesco Castle is widely regarded as a significant cultural and historical site in Milan, offering a blend of architectural beauty, art, and history that appeals to a wide range of interests.
Since there is a vast array of museums at the Sforesco Castle in Milan,I have restricted my review to its museum of paintings, primarily by Italian Painters. After examining Michaelangelo's"Pieta Rondanini",Michaelangelo's last sculptural work that he did not complete, due to his death,I segued over to the Castle Sforesco's Museum of Paintings. Paintings that I especially appreciated were Lorenzo Veneziano's"Resurrection",a fine exemplar of Late Medieval Italian Trecento Painting,Fillippo Lippi's"Madonna and Christ Child"(Italian Renaissance),Andrea Solario's"Female Portrait"(Italian Renaissance),Vincenzo Foppa's"Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian"(Italian Renaissance),Bramantino's"Lamentation of Christ"(Italian Renaissance),Guisseppe Ventimiglia's"Sacrifice of Isaac"(quality Baroque Tenebrism),Juisepe Ribera's"Holy Hermit"(fine paradigm of Counter Reformation Painting),Giacinto Gimignano's"Urania,Astronomy",and Giacomo Ceruti's" Spinner and Rustic"(charming Italian Romanticism). I also relished its outstanding tapestries by Bramantino depicting the twelve months of the year and the signs of the Zodiac. I spent a full day on the grounds of this historic castle, one of my favorite places in Milan.
