The Schulmuseum Steinhorst is situated in the heath village of Steinhorst, within the Gifhorn district of Lower Saxony. It forms part of the museums of the Gifhorn district, under the umbrella of the educational and cultural gGmbH of the Gifhorn district. This location offers visitors a chance to explore the rich history and culture of the region, while also enjoying the natural beauty of the surrounding heathland.
The Schulmuseum Steinhorst is housed in a three-part courtyard complex. This includes the main museum building, which is a restored half-timbered farmhouse from the 17th century, the "old forge", a smaller half-timbered outbuilding erected in 1822, and the Erich-Weniger-Haus. Each of these buildings contributes to the overall historical atmosphere of the museum, providing a unique backdrop for the exhibits.
The main building of the Schulmuseum Steinhorst houses the permanent exhibition, which includes an authentically furnished classroom from around 1900. All the furnishings in this classroom are original, providing visitors with a true-to-life glimpse into the past. The classroom is not only accessible to visitors, but they are also encouraged to "try it out" for themselves. Additionally, the space is used for museum educational events with school classes, further enhancing its educational value.
Since 1994, the Schulmuseum Steinhorst and the Erich-Weniger-Haus have been hosting the "Steinhorster Lesesommer" annually, primarily in July and August. This event features a series of cultural activities, providing visitors with an opportunity to engage with the local culture and history in a more interactive and immersive way.
