The Sandy Ground Historical Museum is situated in the Sandy Ground community of Rossville, Staten Island. This museum is dedicated to the oldest continuously inhabited free black settlement in the United States. It provides a unique opportunity to learn about the history and culture of this significant community.
The Sandy Ground Historical Museum houses the largest documentary collection of Staten Island's African-American culture and history. It is also believed to be the site of the only intact 18th-century African cemetery in America. This makes it a significant place for understanding the African-American heritage and history.
The Sandy Ground Historical Museum is chartered by the New York State Department of Education. It aims to educate and raise awareness about Sandy Ground among both adults and children. This is achieved through guided tours, exhibits, interactive activities such as arts and crafts, and lectures.
Several historic structures in the Sandy Ground community are still standing today. These include five that have been designated as New York City landmarks: a church, a cemetery, and three homes. These structures provide a tangible link to the past and offer a unique insight into the community's history.
