Ornavik is an experimental archaeology site nestled in the wooded area of Beauregard Castle in Hérouville-Saint-Clair. This unique site has been open to the public since May 28, 2011, offering visitors a chance to delve into the history of Normandy from 911 to 1066. The project is carried out by the association 'Les Vikings An 911', established in 2009, and is inspired by the Guédelon Castle project in Yonne.
The Ornavik project is a unique endeavor that aims to present the history of Normandy from 911, the date of Rollon's installation, to 1066, the year of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror. Through interactive workshops, experimental archaeology, and historical reenactments, visitors can learn about the birth of Normandy and discover the daily life of the early Normans.
Another fascinating feature of Ornavik is the Viking trading post. This area aims to present a camp of men from the north, who came from Scandinavia during the Viking expeditions. Started as a small temporary post, it underwent a series of Viking installations, transforming it into a durable trading post. The archaeological discoveries in Normandy being very rare, this Viking establishment is constituted from archaeological excavations in Scandinavia and in areas where the Vikings have left enough remains.
