Øhavsmuseet is a museum that pays homage to the region surrounding the Danish South Sea, also known as Sydfynske Øhav. The museum is not confined to a single location but is spread across several exhibition sites within the Faaborg-Midtfyn municipality. These include the Øhavsmuseet itself, Arresten, Kaleko Mølle, and the Historical Archive of the city of Faaborg (Faaborg Byhistoriske Arkiv). Each of these locations offers a unique perspective on the history and culture of the region.
In 2020, the museum underwent a significant transformation. The basic strategy of the existing museum was revised, leading to the acquisition of an 800 m² hall at the port of Faaborg. This hall, now also known as Øhavsmuseet, has become a central part of the museum's operations, offering a spacious and modern venue for exhibitions and events.
The new museum at the port serves as the first center for the Geopark Det Sydfynske Øhav, which is operated by the four municipalities surrounding the Danish South Sea. The museum plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural heritage of the region. It particularly focuses on the formation of the Ice Age landscape and the cultural history of the landscape. This includes the monuments and buildings that are associated with the history of the municipality and the jurisdiction of the city.
