The Norton Simon Museum is an art museum situated on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California. It was initially opened as the Pasadena Art Institute in 1922, focusing on 19th-century American and European art. The museum has undergone several transformations and name changes over the years, with a significant focus on modern and contemporary art.
In 1953, the museum received a significant donation of nearly 500 works from the estate of Galka E. Scheyer. This collection included many works by renowned artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Alexej von Jawlensky, and Lyonel Feininger, which greatly enriched the museum's collection of modern classic works.
In 1974, the museum entered into an agreement with industrialist and collector Norton Simon, who had a large collection of over 4000 works. This led to the integration of Simon's collection with the museum's existing collection. The museum was subsequently renamed the Norton Simon Museum of Art in 1975, marking a significant milestone in its history.
