The Nordsøen Oceanarium is a public aquarium and museum located in Hirtshals, north Jutland, Denmark. It was opened in 1998 and offers a unique opportunity to explore the marine life native to the oceans around Denmark. The Oceanarium is part of the Nordsøcentre, which also houses a conference centre.
The Main Tank
The main attraction of the Nordsøen Oceanarium is its main tank, which holds 4,500,000 litres of water. This tank is the largest in Northern Europe and is designed to resemble the open sea in the North Sea. It is home to a variety of species including cod, saithe, turbot, sea-bass, spiny dogfish, skates, and ocean sunfish.
Habitat Aquariums and Seal Exhibit
In addition to the main tank, the Nordsøen Oceanarium also features several smaller habitat aquariums. These tanks present different habitats from the North Sea, ranging from the sandy bottom by the jetties to the muddy seafloor at several hundred metres in the Norwegian Trench between Denmark and Norway. The Oceanarium also has an exhibit with seals, where visitors can get close to the two seal species common in Danish waters – the harbour seal and the grey seal.
