In the Volkskundemuseum (Museum of Folk Life) you learn about ordinary daily life in Bruges in the 19th and early 20th centuries. You enter an old classroom, an old pharmacy, a tailor’s workshop, a confectionery store, or grocery store. Time seems to have stood still in these restored labourer's dwellings. All the rooms have a treasury of old items: tobacco products, neatly cut pipe heads, pilgrimage pennants, old children’s games, and cake and chocolate moulds. End your visit with a cool Bruges beer at the ‘The Black Cat' museum inn. If you are lucky, Aristide, the museum's four-legged mascot, will greet you with a quick nuzzle!

Museum of Folk Life Bruges has 1 rating.
The Museum of Folk Life in Bruges offers visitors a glimpse into the daily life of Bruges residents from the 17th to early 20th centuries. Located in a series of restored almshouses, the museum showcases a variety of period rooms and exhibits that depict different aspects of local culture and traditions.
Visitors generally appreciate the museum's authentic representation of Flemish life, with many finding the recreated interiors and workshops informative and well-presented. The exhibits cover various trades and domestic settings, giving insight into how people lived and worked in past centuries. Some highlights mentioned by reviewers include the old-style kitchen, the classroom, and the pharmacy.
However, some visitors note that the museum can feel a bit dated in its presentation style, and the information provided is sometimes limited, especially for non-Dutch speakers. While audio guides are available, they are not always perceived as comprehensive. The museum's relatively small size is seen as both a positive (easy to navigate) and a negative (limited scope) by different visitors.
The museum's location in the picturesque Goedzakken almshouses adds to its charm, but some find the narrow staircases and uneven floors challenging for accessibility. The outdoor area, including a small garden, is often mentioned as a pleasant feature.
Overall, the Museum of Folk Life provides an interesting look at Bruges' cultural heritage, but it may not be engaging enough for all visitors, especially those looking for more interactive or modernized museum experiences.
