The Museum Menden, located in Menden (Sauerland), is a local history museum that was established by Friedrich Glunz in 1912. This makes it one of the oldest museums in Westphalia, a region rich in history and culture. The museum is a testament to the region's past, offering visitors a glimpse into the local history and traditions of Menden and the surrounding areas.
The collections of the Museum Menden date back to the Old Stone Age, providing a comprehensive overview of the region's history. Among the original exhibits from the Hönnetal are a cave bear skeleton, a woolly rhinoceros skull, and hand axes. These artifacts offer a unique insight into the prehistoric era and the creatures that once roamed the area.
In addition to its prehistoric collections, the Museum Menden also boasts a comprehensive collection of weapons. This collection provides a fascinating look into the weaponry used throughout history. The museum also recreates the interior of a Menden farmer's house from around 1800, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily life and living conditions of the time.
In 2010, the Museum Menden expanded with a branch in the so-called "Parasite House", a half-timbered building from 1710 that is also under monument protection. This branch vividly depicts the hard life of a Menden day laborer and his large family around 1840. It provides a unique perspective on the living conditions and struggles of the working class during this period.
