Museum De Buitenplaats is for everyone, from visitors who have a love for art and gardens to enthusiasts of historical and modern architecture. The museum pavilion is open year-round for culture lovers. With its own museum collection full of modern art from after 1945 and changing exhibitions, it offers a feast for the eyes. The Nijsinghhuis is an important part of Museum De Buitenplaats. The former town hall of the municipality of Eelde was purchased in 1971 by the couple Jos van Groeningen (1934-2018) and Janneke van Groeningen-Hazenberg (1943-2007), the founders of Museum De Buitenplaats. They acquired it for the symbolic amount of 1 guilder. In return, they were required to restore the deteriorating house according to the standards of the National Heritage Agency. A visit to Museum De Buitenplaats is not complete without a stroll through the Museum Garden. The garden consists of a formal and an organic section and is divided into three rooms: a labyrinthine garden, a sunken pond garden, and an Appelhof. The garden harmonizes with the platanus pavilion and the yew maze, following the flowing lines of the buildings with their organic structure. The formal part of the garden aligns with the style of the Nijsinghhuis from 1654, featuring its walled backyard with green garden chambers.
