The Hortus botanicus Haren was founded in 1626 (then in Groningen) and has about twenty acres of gardens. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Netherlands. The garden consists of a Chinese garden, Laarman garden, arboretum, pinetum, English garden, a water garden, a rock garden, bamboo garden, a grass garden, agricultural gardens, a greenhouse complex and Celtic gardens.
