The Muséum de Besançon, located in the east of France, is a unique combination of a natural history museum and a public zoo. It is situated within the Citadel of the town of Besançon, offering visitors a rich blend of historical and natural attractions. The museum houses a wide variety of naturalized collections alongside diverse animal sectors, illustrating the complexity of the living world and its utility.
The zoo section of the Muséum de Besançon is a permanent member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). This membership signifies the zoo's commitment to high standards of animal care, conservation, and education. Visitors can expect to see a wide variety of animal species from all continents, presented in six different spaces: the Zoological Garden, the P'tite farm, the Insectarium, the Aquarium, the Noctarium, and the Evolution Pathway.
Since 1998, the Muséum de Besançon has been committed to the conservation of endangered species. This mission is reflected in the selection of species presented in the museum, which are chosen for their rarity, as well as the interest of their social behaviors and their adaptation to the climate. Over the years, the museum has specialized in the reproduction of endangered species, with 70% of the species presented in the Zoological Garden being bred as part of European or international breeding programs.
