Originally, the museum was housed in the basement of the city's archbishop's seminary. However, even before the earthquake in 1976, the process of moving the museum to the Patriarchal Palace had begun. This palace was the former residence of the patriarchs of Aquileia and, from 1751, of the archbishops of Udine. The building is considered one of the main monuments in the city of Udine.

Opening and Collection of the Museum

The museum officially opened its doors to the public on April 29, 1995. It houses a collection of approximately 700 works. Among these works are the frescoes of Giambattista Tiepolo, who was commissioned by Patriarch Dionisio Dolfin to decorate some rooms of the palace.

Layout and Tour of the Museum

The museum tour is spread across three levels. The ground floor hosts a lapidary, which exhibits various objects. The tour begins with the Staircase of Honor, which is decorated on the ceiling. The first floor consists of six rooms, which form the main part of the museum tour. These rooms house a collection of wooden sculptures.

The highlight of the museum is undoubtedly the Tiepolo Gallery, featuring frescoes by the Venetian master and his son Giandomenico. These works showcase Tiepolo's skill in perspective and his ability to create dramatic, light-filled compositions. Visitors often praise the quality and preservation of these frescoes.

The museum's collection extends beyond Tiepolo, including various religious artifacts, paintings, and sculptures that provide context to the region's religious history. The building itself, with its architecture and decorations, adds to the overall experience.
