The Museo civico archeologico di Villa Mirabello is a museum located in Varese, Italy. It has been housed in the Villa Mirabello since 1949. The museum was established in 1871 by local scholars and enthusiasts who were driven by the desire to collect historical and archaeological evidence from the Varese region. This museum is a significant cultural institution in the region, offering visitors a chance to explore the rich history and archaeology of the area.

Expansion of the Museum

The Museo civico archeologico di Villa Mirabello was significantly expanded in 1924 thanks to the donation of the collection of Marquis Andrea Ponti. Ponti was a financier and promoter of archaeological research at the Isolino Virginia, a prehistoric pile-dwelling site now protected by UNESCO. This site is located on a small island in Lake Varese, which Ponti owned. This expansion has greatly enriched the museum's collection, making it a more comprehensive representation of the region's history and archaeology.

Chronological Range of Exhibits

The exhibits at the Museo civico archeologico di Villa Mirabello cover an extremely wide chronological arc. This includes Prehistory, with a particular focus on the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, the Protohistory, which includes the Bronze Age and Iron Age, the Roman period, represented by materials mainly from necropolises and burials, and the early medieval period of the Lombards. This wide range of exhibits offers visitors a comprehensive overview of the region's history from prehistoric times to the early Middle Ages.
