The Musée de la Batellerie d'Allier is situated in the town of Pont-du-Château, nestled on the banks of the Allier River. It is conveniently located just 14 kilometers away from the city of Clermont-Ferrand, making it an accessible destination for those visiting the region.
Inaugurated in 1986, the museum's collection began with documents and objects that Pierre Mondanel had collected over a period of 15 years. These were generously donated by his daughter to the local association of Friends of the old Pont-du-Chateau, forming the foundation of the museum's exhibits.
The museum provides a glimpse into the city's riverine past, when it was a hub for an active boatmen's guild from the 16th to the end of the 19th century. Visitors can explore numerous models and objects related to boating, including sapinières, water coaches, and barges. Additionally, the museum boasts a rich collection of objects representing popular arts and traditions.
