The Municipal Zoo of South American Fauna Noel Kempff Mercado, situated in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, holds a significant position not only in the country but also in South America. This is largely due to its extensive biodiversity of native species, making it a unique destination for those interested in South American fauna.
The zoo was officially opened to the public on August 19, 1979, starting with a modest collection of approximately 20 species and 150 individuals. Over the years, the zoo's collection has significantly expanded due to the seizure of illegal trade of species and habitat destruction. Today, the zoo houses 190 species, including 30 species of reptiles, 121 species of birds, and 40 species of mammals.
As of 2018, the Noel Kempff Zoo has continued to grow its collection, housing 232 species and 1800 individuals. This diverse collection provides visitors with a unique opportunity to observe and learn about a wide range of South American fauna.
