Montoso Gardens, located in the region of Maricao, Puerto Rico, is a unique combination of a farm, nursery, botanical garden, and nature reserve. It is dedicated to the cultivation of plants for both local consumption and export. This privately-owned property spans approximately 90 acres and is situated on the southern slope of Pico Montoso mountain, at an altitude of 1500 feet. It is nestled in the heart of the rugged coffee-growing region in Maricao, adjacent to the Maricao State Forest.
The botanical garden at Montoso Gardens is a vibrant showcase of tropical flora. Visitors can explore a wide variety of plants in all their exuberance and diversity. The garden is home to numerous plant and tree specimens, many of which originated from the initial collection started by the previous owner, horticulturist Dr. Frank Martin. The current owners have been adding plant species since 1987, further enriching the garden's biodiversity.
Conservation is a key mission at Montoso Gardens. The garden is dedicated to preserving various species of tropical plants. Currently, the plant collections include more than 1800 accessions, representing species and cultivars, with 600 cultivated taxa. This commitment to conservation makes Montoso Gardens an important site for the preservation of biodiversity.
