Lauriston Castle is a 16th-century tower house with 19th-century extensions. The museum lets visitors step back in time to experience what life was like in an Edinburgh middle-class home at the beginning of the 20th century. The collections at Lauriston Castle were assembled by Lauriston’s last residents, Mr and Mrs W. R. Reid, and Mrs Reid’s brother Mr William Barton. The collections are displayed within an interior designed by William Robert Reid.

Lauriston Castle has 1 rating.
Lauriston Castle, located in Edinburgh, Scotland, offers visitors a glimpse into early 20th-century upper-class living. The Edwardian interior, largely unchanged since 1926, features a collection of fine furniture, porcelain, and artwork. The castle's grounds, including beautiful gardens and lawns, provide stunning views over the Firth of Forth.
Visitors often appreciate the well-preserved nature of the castle and its contents, noting that it feels more like a home than a typical museum. The guided tours are frequently praised for being informative and engaging, offering insights into the lives of the castle's former residents. The Japanese friendship garden is a particular highlight for many, described as peaceful and well-maintained.
However, some visitors mention that the castle might not be as grand or extensive as they expected, and occasionally tours can feel rushed if the groups are large. Access to the castle is by guided tour only, which some find restrictive, though others appreciate the depth of information provided.
The castle's location, slightly outside the city center, is seen as both a pro and a con. While it offers a quiet retreat from the bustle of Edinburgh, it can be a bit out of the way for some tourists.
Overall, Lauriston Castle provides a pleasant and educational experience for those interested in Scottish history and Edwardian-era living, set in beautiful surroundings.
