Lamport Hall & Gardens and its collection

Lamport Hall & Gardens
Source

Lamport Hall is a Grade I listed building. It contains a wealth of furniture, books, china and paintings, many of which were brought back by the third Baronet's Grand Tour of Europe in the 1670s. Sir Charles Isham is responsible for the present appearance of the garden, with a small Italian garden and the remarkable rock garden rising like a ruin at 24' tall. In the time of Sir Charles this was peopled by small figures, undoubtedly the first garden gnomes in England.

Lamport Hall & Gardens, located in the picturesque village of Lamport, England, offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history and architectural beauty of a traditional English country estate. The hall, dating back to the Tudor period, showcases an impressive collection of art, furniture, and decorative items that span several centuries.

Visitors often praise the well-preserved interiors of the hall, which provide an authentic look into the lives of the aristocratic families who once called Lamport home. The guided tours are generally considered informative and engaging, offering insights into the hall's history and its former inhabitants.

The gardens surrounding Lamport Hall are a particular highlight for many visitors. The extensive grounds feature beautifully maintained formal gardens, including a notable rock garden and an impressive array of seasonal flowers. The tranquil atmosphere of the gardens provides a pleasant contrast to the grandeur of the hall itself.

One of the unique aspects of Lamport Hall is its connection to the creation of the garden gnome. The estate is known for housing the first garden gnome brought to England, which adds an interesting and quirky element to its history.

While many visitors find the experience enjoyable and educational, some have noted that the hall can feel slightly dated in parts, and that some areas may benefit from restoration or updating. Additionally, a few visitors have mentioned that the entry fee can be considered a bit high, especially for families.

The tea room on the premises receives mixed reviews. While some praise the quality of the refreshments and the pleasant setting, others have found the selection limited or the service somewhat slow during busy periods.

Overall, Lamport Hall & Gardens offers a solid experience for those interested in English heritage, architecture, and garden design. Its blend of historical significance, artistic collections, and beautiful grounds make it a worthwhile destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

The house and gardens are well worth a visit although it was disappointing how few rooms are open for viewing, nothing upstairs or the kitchen area. The service in the cafe however was very poor. We arrived just after 12:15 and there was a small queue of around 6 people ahead of us with a gentleman and young girl serving and making hot drinks. There was only one menu available which was being passed along the queue. It took around 10 minutes before we were served with the gentleman disappearing at one point presumably to the kitchen to prepare food orders. We eventually ordered (sandwiches and hot drinks), and was given a numbered spoon to take to the table. It was 1:34 before our order arrived. The drinks came first with the tea being a mug with a tea bag, no milk, no spoon, nothing to place the used teabag in! I asked about milk and was told i had to collect it from back at where the counter was. When the sandwiches finally arrived mine was wrong but the server didn’t apologise or offer to get it changed and as I didn’t wish to wait any longer I accepted it. So unfortunately what was a lovely visit in terms of the house and gardens, was let down by the poor cafe experience and the £16 entrance fee didn’t feel value for money.
