Kraftwerk Peenemünde is a decommissioned coal power plant that was built in the early 1940s. It was originally constructed to supply energy to the Army Research Center Peenemünde and remained in operation until 1990. Today, it stands as a significant industrial monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Current Use of Kraftwerk Peenemünde

The power plant, which is almost completely preserved with its conveyor systems, is the largest industrial monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is now used by the Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde, where special exhibitions are displayed in the former turbine hall. The venue also hosts concerts, adding a cultural dimension to its historical significance.

Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde

After its final shutdown, an exhibition on the history of the place was set up in the power plant with the support of the municipality. This exhibition laid the foundation for the Historical-Technical Information Center Peenemünde (HTI), which later evolved into the current Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde (HTM). Since 2010, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been involved in the museum's operations.

Renovation and Permanent Exhibition

Between December 2010 and January 2012, extensive security, conservation, and repair work was carried out on the buildings and technical facilities of the power plant. This work was financed with 3 million euros from the federal government's economic stimulus package II. On April 27, 2012, the permanent exhibition titled "The Power Plant - Built for Eternity...?" was opened to the public.

Das Kraftwerk, or the Power Plant Museum, in Peenemünde, Germany, offers visitors a look into the industrial and technological history of the region. The museum is housed in a former power plant, which adds to its authenticity and atmosphere. Visitors appreciate the well-preserved machinery and the opportunity to learn about energy production and its role in the area's past.

The museum provides informative displays and exhibits that explain the power plant's operations and its historical context. Many reviewers note that the guided tours, when available, greatly enhance the experience, offering deeper insights into the facility's history and technical aspects.

While the museum is generally well-received, some visitors mention that the information provided could be more comprehensive, especially for those without a technical background. Additionally, some find that more English translations would be helpful for international visitors.

The industrial architecture of the building itself is often highlighted as impressive, with its vast halls and original equipment creating a powerful atmosphere. However, a few visitors note that the facility can be quite cold, so dressing warmly is advisable.

Overall, Das Kraftwerk is considered a worthwhile visit for those interested in industrial history, engineering, or the specific history of Peenemünde. It offers a solid educational experience, though it may not appeal as much to visitors looking for more interactive or diverse exhibits.
