Key West Lighthouse Today

In 1969, after the Coast Guard decommissioned the Key West Light, it was handed over to Monroe County. The county then leased it to the Key West Arts and Historical Society, which currently operates the lighthouse and its associated buildings as the Key West Light House and Keeper's Quarters Museum.

The Key West Lighthouse offers visitors a glimpse into the maritime history of the Florida Keys. Located in Key West, this historical landmark provides panoramic views of the surrounding area from its observation deck. Visitors can climb the 88 steps to the top of the lighthouse for a rewarding view of the island and ocean.

The museum portion, housed in the keeper's quarters, contains exhibits on the lighthouse's history, the lives of its keepers, and the maritime heritage of Key West. Many visitors find the historical artifacts and photographs informative and interesting.

While the climb can be challenging for some, especially on hot days, most find the view worth the effort. The well-preserved grounds and the quaint architecture of the keeper's house add to the overall experience.

Some visitors note that the entrance fee is a bit high for the size of the attraction, and that it can get crowded during peak tourist seasons. Additionally, the lack of parking facilities nearby can be inconvenient for some.
