The Haritacılık Müzesi, or Cartography Museum, is a military museum located in the Cebeci district of Ankara. It is situated within the central barracks of the General Directorate of Maps, an institution affiliated with the Ministry of National Defense. This location gives the museum a unique historical and military context that adds to the richness of its exhibits.
Today, the Haritacılık Müzesi is divided into five sections and boasts a collection of 559 pieces of equipment, materials, and maps. This extensive collection provides a comprehensive overview of the history and development of cartography, making it a fascinating destination for anyone interested in maps and their creation.
The Haritacılık Müzesi houses a collection of historical paper maps produced in various types and scales from the 19th century to the present day. A highlight of this collection is the first example of Turkish modern cartography, a map of Eskişehir produced in 1896 at a scale of 1/10,000. Also of note is the Sakarya map, which was drawn in just 20 days during the War of Independence in 1921 and played a significant role in the victory of the war.
