Great Orme Mines and its collection

Great Orme Mines
Source

The Great Orme Mines, discovered in 1987, are considered one of Britain’s most important archaeological sites. Visitors can walk 200 metres of 3,500-year-old narrow underground passageways leading to the Bronze Age Cavern. In the Visitor Centre Bronze Age bone, stone, and metal tools, including original artefacts and replicas, are displayed. Surface walkways provide views of the 4,000-year-old opencast mine and include displays explaining how ore was extracted and processed into metal. The site also features evidence of later mining, including a Victorian-era mine shaft visible from a bridge. The mine remains an active archaeological site with ongoing research and excavation. A shop on site offers rocks, crystals, minerals, fossils, jewellery, and second-hand books. The Coffee Cabin provides hot drinks, ice cream, and snacks, including a limited selection of gluten-free and vegan options.

The Great Orme Mines in Llandudno, Wales, offer visitors a glimpse into the world of ancient copper mining. This archaeological site dates back to the Bronze Age and is considered one of the largest prehistoric copper mines in the world. Visitors can explore the underground tunnels, some of which were dug out over 3,500 years ago. The tour provides an informative experience about the mining techniques used by our ancestors and the historical significance of the site.

Many reviewers appreciate the knowledgeable and friendly guides who bring the history of the mines to life with their explanations. The underground tour is often described as an eye-opening experience, allowing visitors to understand the challenging conditions faced by ancient miners. Some visitors mention that the low ceilings and narrow passages can be a bit challenging for taller individuals or those with mobility issues, but most find it adds to the authentic experience.

The on-site museum complements the underground tour well, displaying artifacts found in the mines and providing additional context about the Bronze Age and mining history. Some reviewers note that while the museum is relatively small, it is well-organized and informative.

A few visitors mention that the site can get busy during peak seasons, which might affect the tour experience. Additionally, some reviewers suggest that the experience might not be as engaging for very young children.

Overall, the Great Orme Mines offer a unique and educational experience that most visitors find fascinating and well worth the visit. It's generally considered good value for money, especially for those interested in history and archaeology.
