The Garderhøj Fort served various purposes over the years. It was initially used by the Defence Ministry until 1920, then repurposed as an ammunition depot and training ground for police and military. In 1996, the fort was gifted to the Danish people and subsequently restored for public access. This multi-purpose history adds to the fort's appeal for visitors.
The Garderhøj Fort was equipped with a variety of turrets and guns, adding to its historical significance. Notably, it housed two 15 centimetres iron cannons, manufactured in 1887 in Sweden, and fitted in an armoured tower. Additionally, two French-made 'disappearing towers' were placed on the outer sides, each housing a 75 mm gun. These features provide a fascinating insight into the military technology of the time.
