The Fort of Trafaria, also known as the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Saúde da Trafaria, is a historical site located on the left bank of the Tagus river. It is situated in the parish of Caparica e Trafaria in the municipality of Almada, in the Setúbal district of Portugal. The fort is positioned south-west of the Belém Tower on the right bank of the river, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding area.
The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, or Our Lady of Health, is a significant part of the Fort of Trafaria. Constructed in 1678, the chapel was built to accompany a lazaretto, or quarantine hospital, that had been on the site since the late 1600s. The fort itself was built a few years later in 1683 during the reign of Pedro II of Portugal, serving as a complement to the defence of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.
The Fort of Trafaria is currently undergoing a significant transformation. In September 2020, it was announced that the fort would be rehabilitated at a cost of 7.6 million Euros. The fort is set to become the site of the Institute of Art and Technology of the NOVA University Lisbon, marking a new chapter in its history.
